Classic Tracks On Live Albums

Pete Pardo from the Sea of Tranquility website picks his favourite 20 tracks from live albums. He is joined by Dan Brown who shares his own favourite tracks along with some interesting facts.

This focuses mainly on classic hard rock and classic rock so you’ll hear mention of acts like Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. His guest has more wide-ranging tastes.

Here are Pete’s honourable mentions, these are the tracks that should be mentioned but missed out on his top 20.

My Thoughts

Pete has excellent tastes and loves to makes these kinds of lists. I’m not sure I have quite the same kind of mind but here are a few songs I’d pick.

Child in Time by Deep Purple off Made in Japan

Emerald by Thin Lizzy off Live And Dangerous

Both those are on Pete’s list. I’d also add Still In Love With You from Live And Dangerous.

Private Investigations and Telegraph Road by Dire Straits off Alchemy.

Musical Box by Genesis from Genesis Live and Supper’s Ready from the 1973 Rainbow concert

Down The Honky Tonk by Frankie Miller from Live at Rockpalast There are three versions so I’d probably pick the longest.

I Want You by Bob Dylan from At Budokan.

Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End by Paul McCartney from Tripping The Live Fantastic. (yes they are all combined into one medley).

The Bottle by Gil Scott-Heron from Tour de Force.

This is hard and it comes down to picking your favourite songs and then thinking which is the best live version, provided there’s at least one great live performance.

I’ll try to think of a few more but I don’t think there are barnstorming versions of Virginia Plain by Roxy Music, or Heroes by David Bowie or Wishing Well by Free.
