Climax Blues Band Live, Rare & Raw 1973 – 1979

Live, Rare and Raw is a collection of live recordings by the Climax Blues Band in the 1970s. It was released in October or November 2014 depending on the format and region.

What we have are:

  • Marquee Club London 1973
  • Live in New Jersey 1974
  • Live in Guildford 1976
  • Live from Miami 1979

These are all on separate CDs. When I get it on mp3 I’m planning to store it as four separate concerts.

I’m not exactly sure of the band make-up at these different concerts because CBB made frequent changes. However the main band consisted of:

Colin Cooper – vocals, saxophone, harmonica, guitar
Pete Haycock – vocals, guitar, bass
Derek Holt – bass, guitar, keyboards
John Cuffley – drums

Peter Filleul played keyboard for much of the time but he left in 1973 and returned in 1975. In between Richard Jones, one of the original band members returned to play keyboards and bass. If the recording at the Marquee was very early in 1973, George Newsome may have been the drummer.

Eric Clapton’s Rainbow Concert 1973

Eric Clapton’s Rainbow Concert is the famous comeback gig at the Rainbow Theatre in London with Eric Clapton and his friends (The Palpitations) from January 13, 1973.

After recording the exceptional studio album Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, Eric Clapton’s addiction to heroin overwhelmed him. Fortunately his friends led by Pete Townshend from The Who brought him back from the brink.

This album was originally only 34 minutes with six songs and if that’s the album you know, you need to take a second look. It has been extended by more than double and now features 14 songs including a live electric version of Layla.

Eric Clapton’s Rainbow Concert – overall rating 23/30

Live ‘n’ Kickin’ was the posthumously released live album from West, Bruce and Laing that was recorded on their 1973 tour to promote the Why Dontcha studio album.

The answer is West, Bruce and Laing with the following responsibilities:

  • Leslie West — guitar, vocals
  • Jack Bruce — synthesizer, bass, harmonica, vocals
  • Corky Laing — drums

Climax Blues Band FM Live 1973

FM Live is a live album by the Climax Blues Band, recorded in 1973.

The group introduced a lot of new songs into the set rather than drawing heavily on earlier albums.

If you know the Climax Blues Band from their funky hit single Couldn’t Get It Right, you should listen to the mp3 samples before buying this live album. That song isn’t typical and if that’s what you want, you may find World Tour 1976 suits you better.

What you have on FM Live is excellent blues rock powered by the guitar of Peter Haycock.

Van Morrison It’s Too Late To Stop Now 1973

It’s Too Late To Stop Now is the first live album by Van Morrison.

It was recorded in 1973 and it catches him paying his dues to his influences.

It collects the best of the tracks from concerts at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and at The Rainbow in London between May and July 1973.

It’s difficult to categorise an album like this – is it rock, soul or blues? It even has a jazzy feel to it.

This amalgamation of styles is what makes Van Morrison such a special artist and he had a golden period in the late 1960s and early 1970s when he made some of the greatest music ever recorded. Astral Weeks, Moondance and St Dominic’s Preview are amongst my most favourite studio albums and I believe that each is essential.

Which is the best? Well that keeps on changing depending on my mood but St Dominic’s Preview fits neatly between the others in style.

In 2008, a bonus track was added – a live version of Brown Eyed Girl.

Led Zeppelin The Song Remains The Same 1973

The Song Remains The Same was the first Led Zeppelin live album issued from 1973 concerts at the Madison Square Garden, New York which promoted the House Of The Holy studio album.

It was released in 1976 as the soundtrack to the concert film of the same name.

Led Zeppelin are known for their great live performances and they’ve become one of the most heavily bootlegged artists in the world.

It was re-issued in 2007 with a much better sound and with extra songs included. This makes it much more comparable with the other big Zeppelin live album, How The West Was Won.

The Rolling Stones Brussels Affair 1973

Brussels Affair is an official, authorised version of a famous Rolling Stones bootleg from the 1973 Goats Head Soup tour.

It’s brilliant.

Fans of the Stones have wanted this release for years as it catches the mark 2 version of the band with Mick Taylor rather than Brian Jones in their full glory

If you like Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out, you’ll love The Brussels Affair.
