Bob Dylan Live in New York Gaslight Cafe 1961

Live In New York, Gaslight Cafe 6th September 1961 is a live album by Bob Dylan.

At the moment, this is the earliest recording of Bob Dylan performing live in concert. To put the timing into perspective, he recorded the songs for his début self titled album on November 20th and 22nd 1961, i.e. two and a half months after this recording.

Bob Dylan Live 1964 Concert At Philharmonic Hall

The Bootleg Volume 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 – Concert At Philharmonic Hall is another archive live recording. It was recorded on October 31, 1964 in New York and the studio Another Side of Bob Dylan had been released a couple of months earlier in August.

It follows on from Live 1966 “Royal Albert Hall” and Live 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue.

This time, Bob Dylan is still a solo acoustic folk singer although it includes three songs from the yet to be released Bringing It All Back Home. Dylan was shortly to change popular music forever but we didn’t know it.

Joan Baez provided vocals on Mama, You Been on My Mind, Silver Dagger, With God on Our Side and It Ain’t Me, Babe.

Bob Dylan Live 1975 The Rolling Thunder Revue

The Bootleg Series Vol. 5: Bob Dylan Live 1975, The Rolling Thunder Revue is a live album by Bob Dylan recorded in November & December 1975 promoting his Blood On The Tracks album and previewing his 1976 release, Desire.

This is in the same official bootleg series as Live 1966 The Royal Albert Hall Concert. While it’s not as famous, some people will say that it’s even better. Bob Dylan is no longer trying to sound like an extremely literate garage band.

Bob Dylan Live 1966 The “Royal Albert Hall” Concert

The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live 1966, The “Royal Albert Hall” Concert is a controversial live album by Bob Dylan.

It is one of the most famous live recordings ever made as one disgusted fan of Bob Dylan’s electric rather than acoustic songs yells out “Judas” before Like A Rolling Stone. Listen out for it and you”ll also hear Dylan’s instruction to his band to “play it fucking loud”.

And they do.

Feelings were still running high although the electric Bob Dylan first appeared on the Bringing It All Back Home album, released in March 1965.

For many years it was bootlegged and became known as the Royal Albert Hall recording but it is widely known that the Judas heckling comes from the concert at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in May 1966.

Bob Dylan started to issue a series of official bootlegs and this album appeared legally in 1998.

The group backing Bob Dylan in this concert were known at the time as The Hawks but they became better known later as The Band.

Bob Dylan Before The Flood 1974

Before The Flood celebrates Bob Dylan and The Band on tour in 1974 before his Blood On The Tracks album. I think there is an argument that this album helped return Dylan to form after a few years in the wilderness.

It’s an interesting album that has three parts:

  • Bob Dylan & The Band
  • Bob Dylan on his own
  • The Band on its own

What are the best Bob Dylan live albums?

I’ve put together a poll to find out what is the best Bob Dylan live album and I’d appreciate it if you could vote for your favourites.

There are a few to choose from.

Do you like the controversy caused by the Live 1966 Royal Albert Hall performance when Bob Dylan was called Judas after he strapped on his electric guitar?

Or perhaps Bob Dylan turning his act into a Las Vegas style performance with some radical re-workings of a great set list on Bob Dylan At Budokan?

Bob Dylan Real Live 1984

Real Live is a live album by Bob Dylan recorded in 1984 with a star backing band including ex Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor and Ian McLagen from The Faces at concerts in England and Ireland.

It was Taylor’s involvement that persuaded me to buy this Dylan album because I loved his guitar playing with the Stones (listen to it on Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out and Brussels Affair).

And I’m glad I did.

It’s not a classic but it’s well worth hearing.
