Charlie Parker Jazz at the Philharmonic 1949

Jazz at the Philharmonic 1949 is a live recording of Charlie Parker performing at the Carnegie Hall in New York in September 1949.

This is the usual loose jam session mixing bop and swing musicians. Joining Parker are trumpeter Roy Eldridge and tenor saxophonist Lester Young. Other horn players include tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips and trombonist Tommy Turk. The rhythm section is pianist Hank Jones, bassist Ray Brown and Buddy Rich on drums.

Ella Fitzgerald adds vocals to some of the tracks.

There is a very similar titled album from 1946, Charlie Parker Jazz At The Philharmonic 1946 which also features Lester Young.

What Are The Best Live Albums By Charlie Parker?

What are the best recordings of Charlie Parker performing live?

Parker died in 1955 but for the ten years prior to his death, we are blessed with some great jazz recordings as bebop was developed by Parker, his friend Dizzy Gillespie and others.

He made famous studio recordings for Savoy, Dial and Verve but when and where were the best live performances recorded?

I have the 1946 and 1949 albums he did with JATP where he played with Lester Young, One Night In Birdland from 1950 and the Jazz At Massey Hall concert from 1953.

I’m probably missing something essential.

The Quintet Jazz At Massey Hall 1953

Jazz At Massey Hall is a live album by The Quintet. It is a recording of the concert at Massey Hall in Toronto 15 May 1953.

This begs the question “who are the Quintet?”

Just possibly the greatest assembly of jazz talent ever put together on one stage… Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus and Max Roach.

I understand that this was the last time that Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker ever recorded together because of bad feelings between them.

An extended recorded version of this concert has also been released with 14 songs but half of them don’t include Parker and Gillespie. The purist in me thinks that you should go straight for the longer concert but it’s live Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie that attracts me.
