Bruce Springsteen Winterland Night 1978

Winterland Night 1978: The Classic San Francisco Broadcast is a live album by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

It was recorded in San Francisco on 15th December 1978.

This is another radio broadcast that creeps through the European copyright laws. There are several different versions of this concert but this one is on the Left Field Media label.

This is not an official Springsteen approved release… we are still waiting for those.

Dire Straits Live At The BBC 1978

Live At The BBC is a live album by Dire Straits.

The first seven songs on this album were recorded for a BBC Live in Concert radio broadcast on 22 July 1978. The eighth and final song comes from a performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test on 31 January 1981. It wasn’t released until June 1995.

While this is the earliest of the three Dire Straits live albums, it was the last to be released. Since then Mark Knopfler has pursued a solo career.

Bruce Springsteen Live At The Capitol Theater, Passiac NJ 1978

Live At The Capitol Theater, Passiac NJ, September 19th 1978 is a live recording of a Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band.

It’s not an official live album approved by Springsteen but I understand that it’s issued legally from a loophole in the copyright laws that lets live recordings appear after 25 years.

In many way, a live concert from the 1978 Darkness On The Edge Of Town tour is the Holy Grail for Springsteen fans. And where better to record Bruce than New Jersey.

This is a radio broadcast that became one of Springsteen’s most famous bootlegs sold under names like Passiac Nights and Piece De Resistance.

Bruce Springsteen has started to release his archive live recordings including the Agora, Cleveland concert from 1978. These are available on his own website.

Grateful Dead Closing of Winterland December 31 1978

Closing of Winterland: December 31 1978 is a live album by the Grateful Dead. This was the last rock concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Arena and was released in 2003.

The venue had been the band’s spiritual home after the closure of the smaller Fillmore West and it was fitting that the Dead were the last band to play at the venue which was home to The Last Waltz.

The gig went on for so long that breakfast was served to the crowd at dawn.

Jethro Tull Bursting Out 1978

Bursting Out is the first live album by progressive folk and blues group Jethro Tull that was recorded on the European leg of the Heavy Horses tour in 1978.

Jethro Tull are a hard band to classify but I’ve found over the years that I’ve acquired quite a few of their studio albums.

UFO Strangers In The Night 1978

Strangers In The Night is a live album by UFO recorded on their 1978 US tour to promote the Obsession album. Guitarist Michael Schenker left before recording another album.

Unlike Deep Purple or even Uriah Heep, it’s hard to pick out a classic studio album by UFO that is essential listening.

They are all good but there’s no In Rock, Machine Head or Demons & Wizards. I have the five recorded with Michael Schenker after they moved away from space rock and I think they are all good rather than great.

But UFO nail it with Strangers In The Night.

Neil Young Live Rust 1978

Live Rust is a live album by Neil Young recorded in 1978 and some of the songs were used in the film Rust Never Sleeps.

I get confused with how Live Rust fits in with the Rust Never Sleeps album which was also partially recorded live at San Francisco’s Cow’s Palace and later had the audience noise removed.

Live Rust starts with an acoustic set and climaxes with an all-out electric rave. That worked particularly well on a double LP where you could choose which version of Neil Young you wanted.

Controversially the album was squeezed on to a single CD by editing out about 90 seconds of guitar from Cortez The Killer. This horrifies purists but I don’t think it is noticeable when you listen to it.
