California Jamming is a live album by Deep Purple.
It was recorded at the California Jam Festival at The Ontario Speedway on 6 April 1974 and was released in 1996.
Deep Purple created one of the very best live albums with Made In Japan by showing how great songs in the studio could turn into jazz style improvisations with expert musicians having the chance to solo.
Who Are Deep Purple
It’s difficult to keep track of who’s who in Deep Purple
Mark I – Rod Evans (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Nicky Simper (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) 1968-69
Mark II – Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) 1969 – 73
Mark III – David Coverdale (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Glenn Hughes (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) 1974-75
Mark IV – David Coverdale (vocals), Tommy Bolin (guitar), Glenn Hughes (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) 1975-76
Deep Purple then split up from 1976 to 1984
Mark II returned from April 1984 to April 89
Mark V – Joe Lynn Turner (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) 1990-92
Then back to Mark II from August 92 to November 93
Mark VI – Ian Gillan (vocals), Joe Satriani (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) Nov 93 – May 94
Mark VII – Ian Gillan (vocals), Steve Morse (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) 1994 – 2002
Mark Viii – Ian Gillan (vocals), Steve Morse (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Don Airey (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) 1994 – 2002
I have to admit that my main interest is in the 1970 to 1976 versions of Deep Purple and what Blackmore, Gillan, Lord, Coverdale, Hughes and Bolin did away from the Deep Purple brand.

Live In Stockholm is a live album by Deep Purple recorded in November 1970 when they were touring to promote the Deep Purple In Rock studio albums.
It has previously been released as Scandinavian Nights in Europe and as Live and Rare in the USA.
This Time Around: Live in Tokyo is a live album by Deep Purple Mark 4 (with Tommy Bolin) recorded in December 1975.
The concert has previously been released as Last Concert In Japan but this is to be avoided. There were rumours that Tommy Bolin was unable to play his guitar properly that night but things sound much better in this version.
An even more dynamic concert from Mark 4 is available as On The Wings Of A Russian Foxbat.
On The Wings Of A Russian Foxbat is a live album by Deep Purple Mark 4 (with Tommy Bolin) recorded at the Long Beach Arena in California in February 1976.
It has also been released as:
I much prefer the On The Wings Of A Russian Foxbat title because it’s got a lot more character. What is a foxbat? It was the MIG-25 fighter plane.
At this time, Deep Purple were touring to promote the Come Taste The Band album. I know it’s not a classic like Machine Head or In Rock but I’ve always liked it… perhaps because it was the first Deep Purple album I ever owned.
An early concert in Japan has also been released under the titles of Last Concert in Japan and an extended version as This Time Around: Live in Tokyo from December 1975. Rumour has it that Tommy Bolin was unable to play properly at this concert and the Last Concert In Japan version is light on guitar.
