Count Basie Live! 1938 at the Famous Door NYC

Live! 1938 at the Famous Door NYC is a live album by Count Basie with guest soloist Harry James on trumpet.

This also features one of my favourite saxophone players, the great Lester Young.

It is a companion album to Rock-A-Bye Basie Live In ’38 & ’39.

Count Basie Rockabye Basie Live in 38 & 39

Rockabye Basie Live in 38 & 39 (aka Rock-a-byeBasie) is a live album by Count Basie and his orchestra featuring Lester Young.

Sometimes on websites the title is written as Rockabye and sometimes, like the album cover, it is hyphenated.

Just to confuse things more, there is also a studio album called Rock-A-Bye Basie original Recordings 1939-1940.

It was recorded at the Front Door and there is another album of recordings from 1938 – Live! 1938 at the Famous Door NYC.

The Complete Jazz At The Philharmonic On Verve 1944-1949

The Complete Jazz At The Philharmonic On Verve 1944-1949 is an extraordinary collection of jazz superstars performing live in the era where swing gave way to bebop.

Overall there are 10 CDs in this boxset, which, to be honest, is an overwhelming quantity to consider in its entirety.

The philosophy of the JATP was to put together unusual combinations of musicians and see what happens.

Charlie Parker Jazz at the Philharmonic 1949

Jazz at the Philharmonic 1949 is a live recording of Charlie Parker performing at the Carnegie Hall in New York in September 1949.

This is the usual loose jam session mixing bop and swing musicians. Joining Parker are trumpeter Roy Eldridge and tenor saxophonist Lester Young. Other horn players include tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips and trombonist Tommy Turk. The rhythm section is pianist Hank Jones, bassist Ray Brown and Buddy Rich on drums.

Ella Fitzgerald adds vocals to some of the tracks.

There is a very similar titled album from 1946, Charlie Parker Jazz At The Philharmonic 1946 which also features Lester Young.
