Lowell George was asked by Frank Zappa to leave his backing band, the Mothers Of Invention and formed his own band… Little Feat. He became the main songwriter, guitarist and lead singer and was very much the face and figurehead of the band.
Little Feat are extremely hard to categorise as their music reflects rock, r&B, blues, funk, jazz and country to create a unique fusion.
From about 1978, Lowell George’s interest in Little Feat declined and with worsening heath, he recorded a solo album. He died on June 29, 1979 from a heart attack while on tour in Arlington, Virginia.
Little Feat reformed in 1987 when the surviving members brought in singer / songwriter / guitarist Craig Fuller. he left in 1993 when the regular touring was too much for his family commitments. He was replaced by Shaun Murphy who became the first female member of Little Feat. She left in 2009.

Little Feat are such a hard band to fit neatly into a music genre that I broke one of my own rules which said that an album can’t be entered into more than two music polls. This is entered in blue rock. southern rock and classic rock.

Little Feat were an excellent live group in the mid 1970s and their Waiting For Columbus album is very well known and respected. But what if there are even better live recordings?
Live In Holland is a live album and DVD by Little Feat.
It was recorded at a Dutch festival called Pinkpop on June 7th, 1976.
American Cutie is a live album by Little Feat on their tour to promote their third studio album, Dixie Chicken.
It was recorded at Ebbets Field, Denver, Colerado on July 19th, 1973.
but not released until 2012.
This is a single disc version of Late Night Truck Stop released in 2001. This is a radio broadcast recording that I think squeezes through the copyright laws.
I think most people think of the glory years of Little Feat as the early period with their main songwriter Lowell George who died on June 29, 1979.
The band reformed in 1987 with Craig Fuller who was then replaced by Shaun Murphy in 1993. Bill Payne (vocals and keyboards) has been an ever-present member and Paul Barrere (vocals and guitar) and Kenny Gradney (bass) have been members since 1972.

Live At Winterland Valentine’s Day 1976 is a live recording of a concert given by Little Feat in February 1976.
It is listed by Wikipedia as a live album and it’s been sold on eBay but I don’t think it’s an official live album. It may be one of these “legal in some parts of the world” recordings.
There isn’t a shortage of live albums by Little Feat but apart from Waiting For Columbus, there is a serious lack of alternatives featuring main man, Lowell George which makes this special.
It is a live recording that is available from Wolfgang’s Vault and on the basis that’s been around for a long time and hasn’t been shut down, I assume that is legal.

Waiting For Columbus is the first live album released by Little Feat and is considered to be one of the best live albums ever. Plenty more have followed.
It was recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London and Lisner Auditorium in Washington DC in early August 1977 on the Time Loves A Hero tour.
Before punk came along, Little Feat were a critics favourite with their unique brand of fusion rock pulling on the blues, country, boogie and funk. Personally I didn’t see what was so special as the studio albums lacked impact.
My problem was I hadn’t seen or heard them play live. This is a great album for someone who thinks they don’t like Little Feat to hear.
