Yes Progeny Highlights From Seventy-Two

Progeny: Highlights From Seventy-Two is an for those fans of Yes who feel that 14 CDs from 7 concerts on the American autumn/fall tour of 1972 is too much.

I have to admit that I’m one of them. This even has the nerve to challenge Yessongs, an album that I’ve loved for around 40 years. It sets a very high bar for this album to be judged against.

Yes Progeny 1972

The Progeny live archive release from progressive rock band Yes comes in two formats:

  • Progeny: Seven Shows From Seventy-Two – this is 14 CD set captures 7 concerts by Yes.
  • Progeny: Highlights From Seventy-Two – this is a 2 CD set that selects one performance of each song.

I intend to look at these as separate releases.

My big question is , how do these concert recordings compare to the prog rock live album classic Yessongs which was also recorded in 1972? Continue reading Yes Progeny 1972

King Crimson at this stage were:

King Crimson Ladies of the Road 1971 1972

Ladies of the Road is a live double album by King Crimson.

The first CD has live recordings from the Burrell-Collins-Wallace version of the band recorded in 1971 and 1972. The second CD has innovative excepts from live versions of the classic song 21st Century Schizoid Man.

This second version of King Crimson is often overshadowed by the original Greg Lake version and the third band that produced Larks Tongues In Aspic but their contribution has been reprised.

Hawkwind Greasy Truckers Party 1972

Greasy Truckers Party is a live album that features sets by Hawkwind, Man and Brinsley Schwarz

It was recorded at The Roundhouse in London on 13 February 1972.

As it’s available as a digital download that lets you choose what you have and what you don’t, I’m treating this as an album by each of the groups. These are three very different acts withHawkwind with their heavy space rock, Man playing psychedelic guitar rock like the Quicksilver Messenger Service and other San Francisco bands and Brinsley Schwarz with their country based pub rock.

Barclay James Harvest BBC In Concert 1972

BBC In Concert 1972 is a live album by Barclay James Harvest in concert with the Barclay James Harvest Symphony Orchestra.

In the early 1970s it was a popular idea for progressive rock bands to tour with classical musicals in some form of orchestra to help emphasise the distinction between prog and pop. Unfortunately it was extremely expensive to do and BJH hadn’t reached the level of success to allow them to continue with the experiment for long.

This therefore makes this album a very interesting addition to the live albums by Barclay James Harvest.

It seems that there is an alternative album cover for this recording.
