Thin Lizzy struggled to make great studio albums. Even Jailbreak with their big hit single The Boys Are Back In Town wasn’t that consistent.
But they were a great band to see live and that excitement has been captured on Thin Lizzy live albums. The most famous is Live and Dangerous but is it their best?

Thin Lizzy had some early success with singles Whisky In The Jar and The Rocker but it was the Jailbreak album and its single The Boys Are Back In Town (with the fantastic Emerald on the B-side) that really established Thin Lizzy and got people going to their concerts to see what a great band they were live.
You may have noticed that Whisky In The Jar doesn’t feature on the early live albums. That’s because the song was originally intended as a B-side and the Irish folk song was recorded because the group had nothing else. The record company overruled the band and promoted Whisky In The Jar and the band got sick of promoting it. There is a live version of Whisky In the Jar on the deluxe edition of Chinatown.

Life is a live album recorded by Thin Lizzy on the farewell tour in 1983 when Phil Lynott decided to break up the band. Former guitarists Eric Bell, Brian Robertson and Gary Moore joined the band on stage.
Their previous live album, Live and Dangerous is often regarded as one of the best live albums ever so their Life live album has a great deal to live up to.
Continue reading Thin Lizzy Life 1983Live and Dangerous is the famous first live album by Thin Lizzy. It was recorded on the 1976 tour promoting the Johnny the Fox and and the 1977 tour for Bad Reputation.
The album has a great rough, tough live sound but it’s well known that it was extensively touched up in the studio although the exact amount has been disputed by the band and the producer, Tony Visconti.
In 2011 it was remastered and two bonus tracks were added – Opium Trail and Bad Reputation.
