Lonnie Mack is given credit for developing blues rock in the early 1960s by turning an electric guitar into a lead instrument with his first studio album The Wham Of A Memphis Man. That album included an instrumental song called Memphis.

In 1980, the editors of Guitar World magazine ranked “Memphis” first among rock’s top five “landmark” guitar recordings, ahead of recordings by Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Mike Bloomfield.
