What are the best live albums featuring legendary bebop trumpet player, Dizzy Gillespie?
There are more than 40 albums to choose from but which are the most essential? I’m expecting his albums recorded with Charlie Parker to feature very well in the polls but he went on to perform for nearly another 40 years after The Quintet performance at Massey Hall in Montreal in 1953.
To find out, I have created a readers poll.
You probably having heard them all but I see a vote as a recommendation to others that a particular album is well worth hearing and even buying. Continue reading The Best Live Albums By Dizzy Gillespie

Town Hall, New York City June 22 1945 is a live recording of the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet featuring Charlie Parker.
Incredibly this album had to wait sixty years before it was released in June 2005.
It also features Don Byas (saxophone), Al Haig (piano), Curley Russell (bass) and Max Roach (drums).
This is a historic time. The Second World War in Europe had come to an end in May 1945 although it continued in the Pacific until September.

Jazz At Massey Hall is a live album by The Quintet. It is a recording of the concert at Massey Hall in Toronto 15 May 1953.
This begs the question “who are the Quintet?”
Just possibly the greatest assembly of jazz talent ever put together on one stage… Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus and Max Roach.
I understand that this was the last time that Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker ever recorded together because of bad feelings between them.
An extended recorded version of this concert has also been released with 14 songs but half of them don’t include Parker and Gillespie. The purist in me thinks that you should go straight for the longer concert but it’s live Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie that attracts me.
