Racing Cars In Concert 1977

Racing Cars In Concert is a live album by pub rock band Racing Cars during their tour to promote their debut album Downtown Tonight and the follow-up, Weekend Rendezvous.

The concerts was recorded and broadcast by the BBC for Radio 1. These songs were recorded at the Paris Theatre on 26th April and 13th October 1977.

The song They Shoot Horses Don’t They was the hit single after being well promoted by John Peel the previous year from a BBC session. I my memory works, it made his Festive Fifty top 10 for 1976 along with classics like Stairway To Heaven and Pink Floyd’s Echoes.

The pop world changed in 1977 with punk and new wave and suddenly the tuneful, funky music played by Racing cars was old fashioned and yesterday’s news. I think of them as the British equivalent of Little Feat mixing up different styles.

What Are The Best Proto-Punk Live Albums?

I was lucky enough to be a teenager listening to John Peel in the mid 1970s and it was fascinating to see how the development of punk rock and new wave music shook up the music establishment.

Suddenly it was down with Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd…

and up with the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned.

Where did it come from?

What Inspired Punk Rock And New Wave? Proto-Punk Did.
