The first CD was recorded at the Newport Festival on July 3, 1963 and CD 2 was recorded two years later on July 14, 1965.

Playing at the 1963 concert were:

Charlie Rouse – tenor saxophone,
Pee Wee Russell – clarinet,
Thelonious Monk – piano,
Butch Warren – bass,
Frankie Dunlop – drums.

Playing at the 1965 were:

Charlie Rouse – tenor saxophone,
Thelonious Monk – piano,
Larry Gales – bass,
Ben Riley – drums.
