Miles Davis Chasin’ The Bird 1948

Chasin’ The Bird is a live album by Miles Davis.

It was recorded at the Royal Roost inn 1948 and was released on the Arpeggio Blues label in 2000. It previews some of the tracks that appeared on the Birth Of The Cool studio album.

Playing on the album according to Wikipedia are:

Miles Davis – trumpet,
Kenny “Pancho” Hagood – vocals,
Lee Konitz – alto sax,
Gerry Mulligan – sax,
Al McKibbon – bass,
Max Roach – drums.

However I think this is a nonet performance from the Royal Roost between August 30 and September 18, 1948 as the band opened for Count Basie.

Miles Davis John Coltrane Live In New York 1957 to 1963

Live In New York is a live album compilation featuring Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

It is sourced from four different shows:

  • July 13, 1957 at the Cafe Bohemia (tracks 1 & 3),
  • May 17, 1958 at the Cafe Bohemia (tracks 2 & 4),
  • April 2, 1959 at the CBS-TV Studio 61 (track 5),
  • July 27, 1963 at The Pinède, Antibes, France (track 6).

Selecting tracks from such a wide ranging set of concerts means that there is a significant change in the bands and John Coltrane only performs on three of them.

1957 – Miles Davis – trumpet, Sonny Rollins – tenor sax, Red Garland – piano, Paul Chambers – bass and Art Taylor on drums.

1958 – Miles Davis – trumpet, John Coltrane – tenor sax, Bill Evans – piano, Paul Chambers – bass and Philly Joe Jones – drums.

1959 – Miles Davis – trumpet and flugelhorn, John Coltrane – tenor and alto sax, Wynton Kelly – piano, Paul Chambers – bass and Jimmy Cobb – drums.

1963 – Miles Davis –  trumpet, George Coleman – tenor sax, Herbie Hancock – piano, Ron Carter – bass and Tony Williams – drums.
