Funk Live Albums

I find something very appealing about funk music and the way it can lift your spirits and make you want to move.

Funk music began in the mid to late sixties as James Brown started to experiment more with rhythms based around riffs. Sly Stone and George Clinton linked it to the vocal soul groups and then took it to the rock audience.

In the early seventies, funk was a dominant force as soul moved into more into lover man territory with Al Green and Marvin Gaye but then in the late seventies, disco emerged and provided a bridge between soul and funk. It sold a lot of records and funk groups started to commercialise their sound for mass appeal and lost the whatever made funk special.

Sly And The Family Stone Live At The Fillmore East October 4th & 5th 1968

Live At The Fillmore East October 4th & 5th 1968 is a box set of live recordings by Sly And The Family Stone.

What we have are four different sets of Sly Stone performing live (two per night) in New York in an even earlier set than the Woodstock performance. By this stage, the band had released their third studio album Life but it’s before the big hits which started with Everyday People released in November 1968. It’s also before Sly Stone was overtaken by his drug addiction.

Maze Live In Los Angeles 1986

Live In Los Angeles is the second live album by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly to be released. It is also available in some regions as a DVD.

It was recorded at the Universal Amphitheatre on 1 January 1986 and follows on from the excellent Live In New Orleans.

It comes in two formats:

a single CD/mp3 download with 13 tracks as originally released in 1986
a double CD/mp3 download with 18 tracks in the 2003 remastered version

Both are readily available and therefore care needs to be taken to make sure you get the version you want. Like the earlier New Orleans album, it has been extended by the inclusion of new tracks recorded in the studio. This is odd considering the latest version is still criticised for not including the full concert.

Live At The Sex Machine is a live album by Kool & The Gang.

It was recorded in May 1970 and catches the band very early in their career as they played a jazzy funk or perhaps a funky jazz. It’s a long way from their disco hits of the late 1970s.
