The album features Billie Holiday on several on the songs – They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Swing Brother Swing , Jimmy Rushing on one and Lester Young is in the orchestra. The final song – Lover Man – also features Billie Holiday but this time she’s backed by the Toots Camarata Orchestra and not the Basie Orchestra.

Lester Young excelled with Count Basie and in partnership with Billie Holiday but it’s often alleged that his solo work after he left the army, and especially after 1950 wasn’t up to his previous exceptionally high standards.
Is that true?
We have a few early live recordings from Count Basie in the period before the Second World War but his live solo recordings are after 1945.
Jazz at the Philharmonic 1946 is a live album featuring Charlie Parker and Lester Young playing in Los Angeles on two different dates in 1946.
It also includes appearances by Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins,
Buck Clayton and Buddy Rich on some of the songs.

Boston 1950 is a live album by Lester Young.
The first thirteen tracks were recorded at the Hi-Hat in Boston in June, 1950 and the other two in February, 1953.
Playing in 1950 are:
Lester Young – tenor sax
Jesse Drakes – trumpet
Kenny Drew – piano
Joe Schulman – bass
Connie Kay – drums.
In 1953, the piano was played by Horace Silver and the bass by Franklin Skeete.
