Melanie On Air BBC Live in Concert 1969 to 1989

Melanie On Air BBC Live in Concert is a collection of live recordings of Melanie Safka, an American singer-songwriter who has been largely overlooked in music history.

In the late 1960s she was quite a big star and performed at both Woodstock and the famous British equivalent, the 1970 Isle of Wight festival. For more details see Wikipedia.

Rod Stewart Live 1976 – 1998 Tonight’s The Night

Live 1976 – 1998 Tonight’s The Night is a compilation live album by Rod Stewart that extends over 4 CDs.

The first disc is all from 1976, the second moves from 1976 to 1981, the third from 1984 to 1989 and the final disc from 1991 to 1998.

This then captures his career as he turned from a rocker with the Faces to a massively successful pop star.

The critical view is that he had “it” in the early 1970s with albums like Every Picture Tells A Story but he was losing it by the time Sailing and Atlantic Crossing appeared in 1975 and it was gone completely by the time that he turned to disco with Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.

That view probably needs to be refined. He continued to produce high quality singles with the odd exception, even if he’d lost that special creativity that he had in his younger days.

Fairground Attraction Kawasaki Live in Japan 02.07.89

Kawasaki Live in Japan 02.07.89 is a live album by Fairground Attraction.

Is this folk, light jazz or pop? I’m classing it as folk because, apart from the enduring appeal of the song Perfect, I don’t think they stayed in the mainstream long enough to be classed as a pop group.

REM Live Greensboro Coliseum 1989

The recording of the REM concert at the Greensboro Coliseum on 10th November 1989 promoting the Green album is available as:

  • All but five of the songs are on CD2 in the 25th Anniversary release of Green and the remaining tracks can be bought on the Live In Greensboro EP; or
  • All 26 songs are available if you buy the digital version of the Green 25th anniversary album from Amazon or iTunes. This includes the Autorip of the CD version from Amazon.

It’s a bit confusing but it’s worth seeking out because we’re short of prime time REM live albums. This captured the band as they moved to the major label and just before the top selling albums Out of Time and Automatic For The People.
