Rod Stewart Live 1976 – 1998 Tonight’s The Night

Live 1976 – 1998 Tonight’s The Night is a compilation live album by Rod Stewart that extends over 4 CDs.

The first disc is all from 1976, the second moves from 1976 to 1981, the third from 1984 to 1989 and the final disc from 1991 to 1998.

This then captures his career as he turned from a rocker with the Faces to a massively successful pop star.

The critical view is that he had “it” in the early 1970s with albums like Every Picture Tells A Story but he was losing it by the time Sailing and Atlantic Crossing appeared in 1975 and it was gone completely by the time that he turned to disco with Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.

That view probably needs to be refined. He continued to produce high quality singles with the odd exception, even if he’d lost that special creativity that he had in his younger days.

Tracks 16 to 17 recorded in London on May 19,1998.

As you can see, this has a lot of songs on it including his hits in the period, past successes and plenty of cover versions where he shows his debt to Sam Cooke and Otis Redding.

Performances are consistently good and I like the fact that most of the concerts featured provide more than one or two songs.

It’s very good but is it what we really, really want?

What I think many fans, including me, dream about is more live songs from the 1970 to 1975 period when he was performing with The Faces, performing either group or solo songs.

I’ve always found both Coast To Coast and Unplugged and Seated compelling without being absolute classics and I thought Live in London was disappointing.
