Queen A Night At The Odeon 1975

A Night At The Odeon 1975 by Queen is one of the most wanted live albums and DVD releases.

In 1975, Queen raced to #1 in the UK singles chart with Bohemian Rhapsody while they were on their A Night At The Opera tour. The final show was at the Hammersmith Odeon in London and the show was broadcast as the Old Grey Whistle Test Christmas Eve special.

It has been frequently bootlegged but the concert is finally released as a live album and DVD on November 20th 2015, nearly 40 years after the original gig.

I remember clearly watching this on TV on Christmas Eve 1975 when Queen were still new to me. The TV special was only an hour and I’d assumed that it came from a much longer concert. However this set list shows that this was a shortened show. Wikipedia reports that at the normal gig promoting A Night At The Opera, the following extra songs were played:
Procession
Sweet Lady
The Prophet Song
Stone Cold Crazy
Doing All Right

Again according to Wikipedia, the Summer 1976 shows added
You’re My Best Friend
’39
You Take My Breath Away
Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon
Tie Your Mother Down
although the Hyde Park concert was also cut short due to police restrictions.

This means that whilst this is an historic event branded into Britain’s teenagers from the 1970s, it doesn’t do justice to Queen live in this period. I hope that means that we will see more archive live recordings from around this time or the A Day At The Races tour in the first half of 1977.

Enough of the winging about the paucity of the set list. The concert itself was an excellent performance and a must have for anyone who loves Queen.
