Queen With Paul Rodgers Return Of The Champions 2005

Return Of The Champions is a live album and DVD by Queen With Paul Rodgers.

It was recorded at Hallam FM Arena, Sheffield on 9th May 2005.

Queen With Paul Rodgers Return Of The Champions

This was a tour and album that raised lots of difficult questions:

  • Should Brian May and Roger Taylor call themselves Queen?
  • Can anyone stand in the shoes of Freddie Mercury?
  • Should they go for a different style of singer or a soundalike?

Well we know how the pair answered that last question in 2005. They tried a different approach and brought on board one of the greatest rock vocalists who has his own style and could never imitate Freddie.

This controversial album is admired by some as a brave new interpretation of the songs and loathed by others.

What we finish with is a hybrid that is interesting but non-essential. The simple truth is that if you want to hear Queen you’ll head off to albums like Live At Wembley. If you want Paul Rodgers, you’ll turn to his solo albums, Free Live or one of the Bad Company albums.

It’s a curiosity for most of us but, perhaps, a new souvenir for anyone who went to the concerts.
