Live Rock Albums With Saxophone – With A Wide Definition Of “Rock”
I have a huge weakness for a mixture of lead guitar and saxophone in albums and especially live albums.
I also like flute, oboe and some of the other brass instruments.
But in the main it is saxophone.
I thought I’d include this “live rock albums with saxophone” to help others like me find music to hear and buy.
Sometimes, the presence of the saxophone is obvious. Clarence Clemons, The Big Man was such a large part of the sound that made the E Street Band make the songs written by Bruce Springsteen sound fantastic. Roxy Music have always featured Andy MacKay and his oboe and sax.
Sometimes it is a surprise. David Bowie’s live album called David Live is drenched in sax thanks to David Sanborn (alto sax and flute) and Richard Grando (baritone sax and flute).
Live In Paris 79 is a live album and DVD by Supertramp and is an extended version of their first released live album, Paris.

The Deluxe Edition of Breakfast In America by Supertramp has a second CD of live tracks from 1979.
Their live album Paris was recorded in 1979 but it excluded six songs from the concert which are included in this bonus CD together with other live recorded tracks from 1979. These six tracks are included on the CD/DVD combination Live In Paris ’79 but for those of us who have bought Paris, it is a great chance to get the missing songs.

Live At Hammersmith Odeon 1975 is a bonus live recording by Supertramp available with the deluxe version of Crime Of The Century.
It was recorded in London in March 1975.
This live recording has previously been released as Is Everybody Listening although the venue and date is incorrectly described on that album.

Live At The Roxy 1978 is a live recording by Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band.
It was recorded at The Roxy in Los Angeles on October 17th 1975 and broadcast on local radio.
This is not an official release approved by Bruce Springsteen but weaker copyright laws mean that it is legal in Europe. We’ve waited a long time to hear the Darkness On The Edge Of Town tour and I believe the place to start is with the Cleveland, Ohio show available from Springsteen’s own website.

It was recorded during their reunion tour in 1994 as the support act for the Grateful Dead.

This was recorded in New York in November 1970. By this stage Ric Grech (bass) had joined Steve Winwood (keyboards and guitar), Chris Wood (flute, saxophone, keyboards) and Jim Capaldi (drums).

Brendan Byrne Arena, New Jersey 1984 is an archive released live album by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
It was recorded in East Rutherford on August 5, 1984 and is only available through live.brucespringsteen.net
By this stage, the Born In The USA album had seen him switch to performing in huge stadiums. Nils Lofgren had replaced Miami Steve Van Zandt.

It was recorded on their UK and European tour in 2011 and was released in 2012.
While this reunion band didn’t include the main songwriter Jerry Dammers, it did include many of their 1979 band.

Heart Still Beating is a live album by Roxy Music.
It was recorded at a concert in Fréjus, France in 1982.
Roxy Music are a band I have a strong bias towards even if I much prefer the 1973 to 1975 band that gave us the four studio albums. I didn’t have a problem with Brian Eno leaving but I wasn’t so keen on the softer side that was developing on Siren.
This live album comes from their classy smooth pop period that they had after their comeback in 1979. Early Roxy had gone but this band still had plenty to offer.
