The Best Live Album By Roxy Music

I believe Roxy Music had the potential to release one of the greatest live albums ever.

I’m a big fan but unfortunately I don’t think they have (yet) released an absolute classic from the heady days of 1973 to 1975 when they were challenging David Bowie as one of the most exciting experiences.

Perhaps that’s harsh but I recognise the difference between very good and great.

Their past catalogue hasn’t been treated kindly. Viva needs to be extended, the releases for the Manifesto tour in 1979/1980 are very confusing and Avalon tour saw them to continue to smooth out their adorable rough edges.

Their comeback in 2001 is very worthy but, let’s be honest, it is 25 years too late.

Roxy Music Heart Still Beating 1982

Heart Still Beating is a live album by Roxy Music.

It was recorded at a concert in Fréjus, France in 1982.

Roxy Music are a band I have a strong bias towards even if I much prefer the 1973 to 1975 band that gave us the four studio albums. I didn’t have a problem with Brian Eno leaving but I wasn’t so keen on the softer side that was developing on Siren.

This live album comes from their classy smooth pop period that they had after their comeback in 1979. Early Roxy had gone but this band still had plenty to offer.

Roxy Music Viva 1973 to 1975

Viva is the first live album by glam / art rock group Roxy Music. It has been pulled together from three concerts at the Glasgow Apollo in November 1973, Newcastle City Hall in November 1974 and the Wembley Arena in London in October 1975.

This is Roxy Music after Brian Eno left. All three concerts feature his replacement Eddie Jobson.

I’m very conflicted about this live album and I’ve been putting off writing a review in the hope that we might get a remastered, extended version that takes away all my criticisms.

But I’ve been waiting for years to get a better version of Viva and I don’t even hear any rumours.

Roxy Music Concerto or Ladytron 1979

Concerto is a live album by Roxy Music recorded in 1979 and released in 2001. It has also been released as Ladytron in 2002 and Concert Classics in 1998.

Confused?

This is Roxy Music after they’ve reunited and recorded the Manifesto studio album so it’s a much smoother, perhaps less interesting group.

This album has been released under license and Briyan Ferry and the other members of Roxy Music have had nothing to do with the release.

Roxy Music Live 2001

Roxy Music Live is a record of how this great group sounded on the 2001 world tour after being apart from 1983.

Until this album, Roxy Music have been relatively poorly served by the quality of their live albums – Viva, Concerto / Ladytron and Heart Still Beating. I think plenty of people have been burnt by the confusing releases from the 1979/80 tours.
