Roxy Music Viva 1973 to 1975

Viva is the first live album by glam / art rock group Roxy Music. It has been pulled together from three concerts at the Glasgow Apollo in November 1973, Newcastle City Hall in November 1974 and the Wembley Arena in London in October 1975.

This is Roxy Music after Brian Eno left. All three concerts feature his replacement Eddie Jobson.

I’m very conflicted about this live album and I’ve been putting off writing a review in the hope that we might get a remastered, extended version that takes away all my criticisms.

But I’ve been waiting for years to get a better version of Viva and I don’t even hear any rumours.

Supertramp Paris 1979

Paris is the first live album released by Supertramp. It was recorded in November 1979 in Paris on the tour to promote their mainstream breakthrough album Breakfast In America.

I remember seeing Supertramp on the Even In The Quietest Moments tour in 1976. I don’t know why but I can remember feeling the bass continually thudding into my chest, something that even Black Sabbath didn’t manage to achieve. Of course, with Sabbath I may have been too worried about protecting my hearing to notice.

Supertramp have never fitted into my definition of progressive rock so I’m treating them as an art rock group.

A combined DVD/CD release called Live In Paris ’79 has the missing six songs from the original concert and is therefore a more sensible purchase.

Joe Ely Live Chicago 1987

Live Chicago 1987 is an archive recording on a concert in Chicago by the Joe Ely band while they were promoting the Lord Of The Highways album.

The band was unique for Joe Ely as it features the talents of Bobby Keys on saxophone as a joint soloist along with David Grissom on guitar. If the name Bobby Keys sounds familiar, he has played regularly with The Rolling Stones and appeared on their three classic albums, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street.

This has been a popular bootleg and has only been officially released since 2009.

The Cate Brothers Live 1998

Live is a recording of southern soul and blues group The Cate Brothers in concert.

According to AllMusic.com, it was recorded on the 23rd and 24th of October 1998. It was released in August 1999.

I saw the Cate Brothers perform In One Eye & Out The Other on the Old Grey Whistle Test on BBC2 in about 1976 and I was hooked by their sound.

I don’t understand why they aren’t much better known and much more popular.

Bill Nelson Live In Concert At Metropolis Studio 2011

Live In Concert At Metropolis Studio is a live recording of a concert in March 2011 by Bill Nelson and the Gentlemen Rocketeers in London.

It comes as a 2 CD plus DVD set or you can buy it as an mp3 download without the video.

If you’re not familiar with Bill Nelson, he was the main man – singer, lead guitarist and songwriter – in art rock group Be Bop Deluxe.

Immediately he broke up the group, he recorded another excellent album, Sound On Sound as Bill Nelson’s Red Noise. Then he abandoned his guitar in favour of keyboards and released many albums of electronic and ambient music.

His Wikipedia entry shows how difficult it is to keep up with the music that Bill Nelson has been releasing.

he’s come back into the spotlight with a cracker.

Bruce Springsteen Live At The Main Point Bryn Mawr 1975

Live At The Main Point, 1975 is a recording of a Bruce Springsteen concert that has been released in the UK and is available for sale on Amazon.co.uk.

This February 1975 recording has been one of the most celebrated Bruce Springsteen bootleg albums for many years as it catches Springsteen previewing Born To Run to his  fans at the Bryn Mawr club in Philadelphia. It has a very different sound to Hammersmith Odeon London recorded later in the year.

I understand that different copyright laws mean that these recording can be legally released but I’m not a lawyer so I’m just reporting what I’ve read elsewhere. I think it would be great if Springsteen could officially released it. If he’s not happy about the recording quality and doesn’t want to profit from it, he could donate the royalties to charity.

Climax Blues Band Blues From The Attic 1993

Blues From The Attic is a live album by the Climax Blues Band released in 1993.

One of the things that made the Climax Blues band popular in the early to mid seventies was the guitar playing of Peter Haycock. He doesn’t feature on this live album but you can hear his playing on FM Live.

Climax Blues Band FM Live 1973

FM Live is a live album by the Climax Blues Band, recorded in 1973.

The group introduced a lot of new songs into the set rather than drawing heavily on earlier albums.

If you know the Climax Blues Band from their funky hit single Couldn’t Get It Right, you should listen to the mp3 samples before buying this live album. That song isn’t typical and if that’s what you want, you may find World Tour 1976 suits you better.

What you have on FM Live is excellent blues rock powered by the guitar of Peter Haycock.
