Live Albums By Bobby Womack
Bobby Womack is one of my favourite soul singers and I don’t understand why he isn’t better known.
He started as lead singer of The Valentinos and he wrote It’s All Over Now which gave The Rolling Stones an early #1 in the UK.
He played guitar in Sam Cooke’s band and after Cooke died, controversially married Sam Cooke’s widow just three months later.
Bobby Womack then played guitar for Aretha Franklin on including the Lady Soul album and he wrote songs for Wilson Pickett including I’m A Midnight Mover. he wrong the instrumental Breezin’ that George Benson had huge success with in 1976.
Womack then started his solo career with a cover of the Mamas And Papas song California Dreamin’ and played guitar on Sly Stone’s There’s A Riot Goin’ On album.
This man has serious credentials and you’d do yourself a huge favour if you pay attention to his music.
One of the reasons why he’s not been more successful is that he’s written some great songs but he’s struggled to maintain a high level of consistency throughout an album.
That is until the early 1980s when he recorded The Poet and The Poet 2.

The Womack Live is the first live album by soul singer Bobby Womack.
He is another of my “should have been huge” artists and if you like classic soul, you should listen to Bobby Womack. he nearly made it big with his early eighties albums The Poet and The Poet II.
The Womack Live catches him much earlier (it was released in 1970 but I’m not sure when it was recorded).
By then he’d written the #1 hit for The Rolling Stones, It’s All Over Now which Rod Stewart covers on the live album Coast To Coast. He’d also written songs for Wilson Pickett including I’m a Midnight Mover.
