He’s got a terrific set of songs to choose from but he does have a habit to head for the middle of the road.

  10. For Your Love – 5:06
  11. Another Star – 5:55

Of course, I Just Called To Say I Love You is still likely to make you cringe.

This is one of those cases when you hear a live album and think that it’s very good but you find yourself thinking what might have been if an album had come out in 1975 with an emphasis on Innervisions and Songs In The Key Of Life.

Here is what we are missing, an early version of Superstition. I’m not sure exactly when.

It’s spine-tinglingly good.

So here is Living For The City from 1974.

Natural Wonder vs A Compilation vs The Key Studio Albums

What should you do if you want a taste of Stevie Wonder in your album collection but without going crazy?

I don’t think Natural World is the answer if you’re looking for the essence of Stevie Wonder as an adult star. A live album from 1975 or 76 could be if the record company digs around in its vaults. It’s hard to believe that live recordings don’t exist when live albums were so popular.

You could make a strong case for being a completist from 1972 to 1980 when he was at his peak with these albums:

  • Music of My Mind
  • Talking Book
  • Innervisions
  • Fulfillingness’ First Finale
  • Songs in the Key of Life
  • Hotter than July

Too many albums?

Well if you really force me to pick one, it would be Songs in the Key of Life for the big hits and superb album tracks. I’d need to top up with some of the singles as well. I can’t imagine not having his version of Superstition on my iPod.

Stevie Wonder’s Original Musiquarium I is a good summary of this essential period in terms of his studio recordings.
