Elton John One Night Only The Greatest Hits 2000

One Night Only The Greatest Hits is a live album by classic rock star Elton John. It was recorded at two concerts at the Madison Square Garden in New York in October 2000.

I don’t why but I’m irritated by the title One Night Only when there were two nights.

The album also brought out various famous guest stars – Kiki Dee, Ronan Keating, Bryan Adams, Anastacia and Mary J. Blige.

There’s obviously no problem with Kiki Dee singing on Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. We’d rather have her than anyone else. But I’m not sure that the Elton John purists are going to want the others.

It’s not like it’s John Lennon turning up to help sing Lucy In The Sky Of Diamonds is it? (see Here & There)

There are plenty of big hit songs included here so I don’t think there can be any complaints about it not living up to its name.

This is a very professional, slick performance by Elton John and his band. Elton is in his early fifties at this stage but he still seems to have plenty of enthusiasm for songs that he must have played hundreds, perhaps thousands of times.

One Night Only vs An Elton John Compilation vs The Original Albums

I’ve struggled with Elton John’s studio albums – even Goodbye Yellow Brick Road – but I have to admit that he does have some great hits. The only big song I think is missing is Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word.

There are plenty of compilations to choose from but the core period to focus on is from 1970 to 1976.

I think One Night Stand works well if you just want to focus on the hits.

I don’t think it’s the best of Elton John. Played at the concert but not included on the album because it wasn’t a hit is Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding. I think this is a terrific bit of moody music which is basically Elton John showing that he can be a prog rocker.

Here And There is a better live album. This one will be pulled out when I hear an Elton John hit on the radio and want more.

What Other People Say

There are complaints that we don’t have the full set list on the album.
