17-11-70 is the first live album by Elton John. In the USA, it’s promoted as 11-17-70 as the day and month move around.
It was recorded at the A&R Recording Studios in New York on 17 November 1970 broadcast on WABC-FM radio. The album was released in April 1971.
Songs On Elton John 17-11-70
- Bad Side Of The Moon – 5:00 (this was the b-side of the Border Song single)
- Amoreena – 4:54 (Tumbleweed Connection)
- Take Me To The Pilot – 5:55 (on the studio album called Elton John)
- Sixty Years On – 7:22 (Elton John)
- Honky Tonk Women – 4:07 (cover of the Rolling Stones song)
- Can I Put You On – 6:10
- Burn Down The Mission (Incl. My Baby Left Me / Get Back) – 18:28 (Tumbleweed Connection and then covers of Arthur Crudup and Beatles songs)
I’m disappointed that this album has been extended in the same way that Here & There has been. According to Wikipedia, the album misses the first five songs of the set played – I Need You To Turn To, Your Song, Country Comfort, Border Song and Indian Sunset – and the encore, My Father’s Gun.
Playing on the album are:
Elton John – vocals, piano
Dee Murray – bass, backing vocals
Nigel Olsson – drums, backing vocals
This is a fascinating insight into Elton John just before he became an international superstar. He was already successful but he was about to have a string of big hit singles and albums.

The Best Live Albums Of All Time
Later Elton John live albums feature under classic rock and pop but I’m treating this one as a singer-songwriter album because it’s an intimate performance.
Please vote in my poll to find the best live albums by singer-songwriters.

Because there are so many excellent singer-songwriter albums with very different styles, I have split the poll into two and you may find some of your favourites in the second division. Albums will be promoted when they get enough votes.
