This was the second Grateful Dead live album that I really liked (after Ladies And Gentlemen from 1971).

These Spring 1977 concerts have come to be regarded as a classic period for the band by Deadheads and, when you hear this album, you’ll understand why, even if the band had lost their earlier psychedelic and country influences.

The set list reflects the Terrapin Station studio album that hadn’t yet been released and it is a very good selection I’m giving 9 out of 10.

I’m sometimes critical of the band’s singing and it’s usually Jerry Garcia that strays away from proper pitch but here the band sing really well. Donna Godchaux’s background singing is restrained and supportive. Garcia’s guitar is once again excellent. I’m rating it at 10 out of 10 for performance.

Again I feel I have to penalise it on atmosphere and authenticity. Yes it’s only one night’s performance which is the way I really like it but I want to hear the band talking to the audience. ( out of 10 in my third rating.

A total of 28 out of 30 is only one point behind the most I’ve given to any live album and it makes this my joint favourite Grateful Dead live album. The fact that it’s closer to classic rock may mean that it’s a good place for newcomers to the band to start.

While the Grateful Dead are hard to fit into a one music genre or another, they have live albums in the psychedelic / San Francisco poll, in the jam band poll and the country rock poll. While the dedicated poll is the best guide for fans, a high ranking in a genre poll will help attract more fans to the Dead’s music so please vote.
