How The West Was Won is a live album by Led Zeppelin from gigs in June 1972 at the LA Forum and Long Beach Arena in the USA.
The world waited for a long time for a Led Zeppelin live album and when it did appear, The Song Remains The Same received a disappointing reception although it’s been improved with the extended reissue.
How The West Was Won was released in 2003 and was immediately acclaimed as the real sound of Led Zeppelin live.
Full House is the first live album by the J Geils Band, recorded at The Cinderella Ballroom, Detroit on April 21-22, 1972.
If you love full blooded, R&B based rock you need to hear the first two live albums by the J Geils Band – Full House and Blow Your Face Out. Both do a great job of capturing the excitement of their live shows.
Live In Europe is Rory Gallagher‘s first live album as a solo artist and was recorded in February and March 1972.
Yessongs was the first live album by progressive rock group Yes in 1972 and it was a triple promoting the Fragile and Close To The Edge studio albums. It is now a double CD.
This album challenges the idea that progressive rock live albums aren’t exciting. I’ve even wondered myself whether some groups are better in the studio than live but Yes show they are terrific.

Made In Japan is one of the best and most famous hard rock live albums that captured mark 2 Deep Purple at their peak, promoting the outstanding Machine Head album.
Purple have gone on to release plenty of live albums, some that date before this 1972 concert and some after but this is the one to hear first.
Just the look of the cover makes me quiver with excitement. I loved this as a teenager and have continued to love it for over thirty years.
