Blowin’ is a live album of the Jess Roden Band. It was recorded at the Birmingham Town Hall and Leicester University in November 1976.
Earlier in the year, the Jess Roden band had released a live EP with three songs – Can’t Get Next To You, On A Winner With You & You Can Leave Your Hat On.
I remember hearing this on the John Peel late night show on BBC Radio 1 and my love affair with the music of Jess Roden started. I never tracked down the EP but I bought Blowin’.

One of my very favourite live albums is Live At The BBC by Jess Roden. This man should have been a huge star.
Anyway there is a Jess Roden anthology coming out called Hidden Masters and CD5 is packed with previously unreleased live tracks by Jess Roden from 1966 (with Alan Bown) to the glory days of the mid seventies to his come back in 1996. Continue reading Jess Roden Hidden Masters
Live is the first live album by Status Quo, recorded at the Glasgow Apollo in October 1976 featuring the classic line up of the band.
I saw Quo in about 1977 so this captures the band very much as I remember them.
The sound is basic but the songs are endearing. I’ve got this playing in my car at the moment and I can’t stop playing CD 2 because it’s such a lot of fun.
In 2014 a boxset version of this album was released with two extra concerts, from Sydney, Australia in 1974 and Tokyo, Japan in 1974.
One More From The Road is the first live album from the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band and was recorded in 1976.
This is both a thrilling and very sad live album.
It was recorded in July 1976, fifteen months before the plane crash that killed lead singer/songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, as well as guitar player Steve Gaines and his sister, backing singer Cassie Gaines.
You can’t help listening to this classic driving rock and wondering what Lynyrd Skynyrd led by Ronnie Van Zant would have produced in the future.
Live At The BBC is a live album of the Jess Roden Band live in concert in December 1976 from The Hippodrome, London with four extra live in the studio recordings from 1975. These were broadcast on the John Peel show and that’s where I first heard Jess Roden.
In fact it might be the only place I’ve heard this great singer on the radio.
I was thrilled when I found this album was released on CD in 1996 and I think it could be the best live album ever.
A bold statement but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played this CD. It’s a perfect mix of rock, soul, blues and funk. I adore it.
I used to have a previous live album by Jess Roden called Blowin’ which I loved as an LP.
