Live Folk And Folk Rock Albums Of The 1980s
Folk music is hard to define. Wikipedia really struggles but does identify some characteristics for folk or traditional music:
It was transmitted through an oral tradition.
The music was often related to national culture.
They commemorate historical and personal events.
The songs have been performed, by custom, over a long period of time.
There can be a fusion of cultures as people with different background mix together.
There was a significant revival in the interest in folk music after World war 2 creating what some people call contemporary folk music. This was originally acoustic based but from the mid 1960s onwards with The Byrds and Bob Dylan, it was electrified to create folk rock.

It was recorded at Hobart University in Hobart, Tasmania (Australia) on October 15, 1980.

Live in Edinburgh is a live album by Scottish folk singer Dick Gaughan.
It was recorded at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh during the Edinburgh International Festival in 1984.
His website tells the story that this was his first concert after serious vocal problems had stopped him singing for seven months.

On Tour was a live album by Steeleye Span.
It was recorded at the Adelaide Opera Theatre in Adelaide Australia in1982 and was only released in that country. The album has since been expanded and re-released around the world as Gone To Australia On Tour 1975 to 1984 which adds extra songs.
You can see details of the original, hard to find release at Discogs.
It may be available from Amazon.com – Amazon.co.uk as a second-hand item but unless you are a Steeleye Span collector, it’s best to look at Gone To Australia.

Live In America is a live album by The John Renbourn Group.
It was recorded at the The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, California on April 18,1981. Renbourn revives the spirit of Pentangle with the presence of singer Jacqui McShee in the band.

Live At Rockpalast 1980 is a live CD and DVD by the Ronnie Lane Band.
Ronnie Lane is another artist that I’m aware that I have a positive bias towards as I followed him from The Faces into his solo career.
The Belfast Gigs is the second live album by Irish rock band Horslips.
It was recorded on their farewell tour at the Whitla Hall in Belfast on April 29th & 30th and May 1st 1980.
By this stage, the Horslips sound had toughened up to almost Irish hard rock.
Reckoning is an acoustic live album by the Grateful Dead.
It was recorded in September and October 1980. It was mainly recorded at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco and at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
There is a companion album called Dead Set which collects together electric performances from the same concerts.

Discovered: Live In Concert is a live album by Peter, Paul and Mary.
It includes twelve previously unreleased songs. It’s not clear to me from reading their website when these tracks were recorded but it looks as if they come from the 1980s.
The album was released in November 2014.
