Steve Miller Band Live! 1982

Steve Miller Band Live! is a live album by the Steve Miller Band.

It was recorded at the Pine Knob Amphitheater in Detroit on September 25, 1982.

The Steve Miller Band were very popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s with best selling albums including Fly Like An Eagle (1976), Book Of Dreams (1977) and Abracadabra (1982).

Whilst I wasn’t a big fan at the time, hearing these songs takes me back to my days as a teenager and as a university student. It has a strong emotional appeal.

Richard Thompson Live At The BBC 1973 to 2009

Richard Thompson Live At The BBC is a collection of songs performed live in concert and in the studio by Richard Thompson or Richard and Linda Thompson between 1973 and 2009.

It features three CDs and a DVD.

While the live in the studio recordings often have a little more intensity or intimacy than studio tracks which risk being over-produced, the really interesting things here are the live in concert performances:

  • CD 1 tracks 12 to 18 were recorded live at the Paris Theatre, 22nd May 1982 features Richard & Linda Thompson;
  • CD 2 tracks 4 to 10 were recorded live at The Hammersmith Palais, 20th November 1986.

Showtime is the third live album to be released by the J Geils Band.

It was recorded at The Pine Knob Music Theater in Clarkston, Michigan in September 1982 and quickly released in November 1982.

By this stage, the band were moving away from their home base of blues and R&B to incorporate a classic rock feel to the material. The single Centrefold was a #1 in the USA and a #3 in the UK.

Roxy Music Heart Still Beating 1982

Heart Still Beating is a live album by Roxy Music.

It was recorded at a concert in Fréjus, France in 1982.

Roxy Music are a band I have a strong bias towards even if I much prefer the 1973 to 1975 band that gave us the four studio albums. I didn’t have a problem with Brian Eno leaving but I wasn’t so keen on the softer side that was developing on Siren.

This live album comes from their classy smooth pop period that they had after their comeback in 1979. Early Roxy had gone but this band still had plenty to offer.

The Beat Live at the US Festival 1982 1983

Live at the US Festival is a live album and DVD of The English Beat performing live at the US Festivals in 1982 and 1983. British fans know the group as The Beat,

CD Tracks 1-9 were recorded September 3, 1982
CD Tracks 10-17 were recorded May 28, 1983
DVD Tracks 1-12 were recorded September 3, 1982.
DVD Tracks 13-26 were recorded May 28, 1983.

Both festivals were held at the Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernardino, California.

As someone who listens to music much more than I watch DVDs, I find it irritating that we lose nine tracks on the audio version that we can load into our mp3 players. That said, I think the editors did it sensibly by not duplicating the hits. The DVD has two versions of Mirror In The Bathroom within three songs.

While The Beat broke up in 1983, Ranking Roger joined with members of The Specials to create Special Beat and released a number of live albums.

Hall & Oates Greatest Hits Live 1982

Hall & Oates Greatest Hits Live is a collection of live recordings from their 1982 tour to promote the Private Eyes studio album.

This catches the duo in their peak commercial period although H2O and Big Bam Bam were to increase their stock of hits in thenext few years meaning Greatest Hits Live is a misnomer as a title. It’s also a title that makes me very nervous as it screams “cash-in”.

This is an exception because it serves as an excellent summary of Darryl Hall and John Oates performing live in 1982.

It features the following American #1 singles – Rich Girl, Kiss On My List, Private Eyes, I Can’t Go For That – and more top 10 singles – Sara Smile, She’s Gone, You Make My Dreams and Did It In A Minute – so there’s no shortage of hits.
