Miles Davis Bitches Brew Live 1969 1970

Bitches Brew Live is a live album by Miles Davis.

It includes:

  • three previously unreleased songs recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 5, 1969 (tracks 1 to 3)
  • the full set played at the Isle Of Wight Festival in England on August 29, 1970.

3 PREVIOUSLY UNISSUSED TRACKS recorded July 5, 1969 at NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL including the first ever professionally recorded live version of “Miles Runs The Voodoo Down” and the first known recording of the revamped electric version of “Sanctuary”

The band for the Newport performance was:

Miles Davis – trumpet
Chick Corea – electric piano
Dave Holland – bass
Jack DeJohnette – drums

Wayne Shorter missed this performance because of traffic problems.

Playing at the Isle Of Wight were:

Miles Davis – trumpet
Gary Bartz – alto  and soprano sax
Chick Corea – electric piano
Keith Jarrett – organ
Dave Holland – bass
Jack DeJohnette – drums
Airto Moreira – percussion

2. Sanctuary
3. It s About That Time/The Theme
4. Directions
5. Bitches Brew
6. It s About That Time
7. Sanctuary
8. Spanish Key
9. The Theme

There are a lot of live recordings of Miles Davis in this electric period in the late 1960s but the Newport tracks are very unusual with Davis backed only by the rhythm section.

This isn’t my era of jazz but I can understand that this is an important phase.

The Allman Brothers Band Fillmore East February 1970

Fillmore East, February 1970 is an early live album by The Allman Brothers Band.

Don’t confuse it with the recognised classic live recording The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East from 1971.

Mott The Hoople Fairfield Hall Live 1970

Fairfield Hall, Live 1970 is a live album by Mott The Hoople.

It was recorded in Croyden in the UK on 13 September 1970.

This is recorded well before David Bowie rescued them with the hit single All The Young Dudes.

One track from the concert, Keep a Knockin’ was previosly included on the Wildlife studio album released in March 1971. Their producer, Guy Stevens didn’t think the rest of the concert was good enough and their plans to release a live album were postponed.

In retrospect, it looks like Guy Stevens was wrong as the album has its own charms. It finds them rocking hard but without the brutal attack of the 1973/74 Mott the Hoople Live.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live 1970

I’ve seen The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live album offered for sale as a single digital download or two individual CDs called Live and Live volume 2.

It was recorded live at The Troubadour in Los Angeles on March 21–22, 1970 and was released later the same year.

The original Live in itself was a double album when it was originally issued on vinyl.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live 1970

I should warn you that by this time Mike Bloomfield had left the group and Butterfield had designed to change his sound to a more horn based approach.

Wikipedia describes it as a “blues-jazz-rock-R&B hybrid sound” and I agree. It is NOT dominated by surging guitar solos in the way that many, more traditional, blues rock live albums are. I recommend that you hear the mp3 samples at Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk. Continue reading The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live 1970

It pulls its songs from concerts recorded at the Fillmore East in New York on February 13 and 14, 1970. These are also featured in Dick’s Picks Volume 4.

Compiler Owsley Stanley (Bear) wanted to pay tribute to Pigpen when it was being produced.

In 2001 four more tracks from February 1970 were added to the album including a second version of Smokestack Lightnin‘.
