Emerson Lake & Palmer Pictures At An Exhibition 1971

Pictures At An Exhibition is the first live album released by progressive rock group Emerson Lake & Palmer. It is their interpretation of the Mussorgsky classical composition and was recorded at a concert in Newcastle, England in March 1971.

Have ELP butchered a classic with their pretentious keyboard excesses or have they charmingly updated it?

I bought Pictures At An Exhibition as a teenager and I’ve always had a soft spot for it.

The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East 1971

At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers Band is one of the most famous live albums ever released. It was recorded in March 1971 during concerts at the Fillmore in New York.

There is also an extended version called The Fillmore Concerts with the live songs from Eat A Peach or the At Fillmore East Deluxe Edition which has another song added.

Tragedy wasn’t very far away from The Allman Brothers Band. Guitarist Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident on October 29, 1971 in Macon, Georgia. On November 11, 1972, Bass player Berry Oakley died in another motorcycle accident only three blocks from where Duane Allman had his accident.

Live At Fillmore East has historical significance and whilst The Allman Brothers Band continued to record and tour, things could never be the same.

Aretha Franklin Aretha Live At Fillmore West 1971

Aretha Live At Fillmore West is a live album by soul singer Aretha Franklin in concert in San Francisco over three nights in March 1971.

These concerts caught Aretha singing pop songs rather than her great soul classics from albums like I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You and Lady Soul.

It has also been released in various versions.

James Brown Love Peace Power 1971

Love Peace Power is a James Brown live album recorded in Paris (France) in March 1971.

This is a very different James Brown than was featured on the famous Live At The Apollo 1962. The high energy soul and r&B tunes are out and in their place is hard driving funk.

If you’re a late comer for James Brown, this is probably much more how you expect him to sound when he was in his prime (he was coming up to his 38th birthday).

Funkadelic Live Meadowbrook 1971

The full title of the only live Funkadelic album is Funkadelic Live: Meadowbrook, Rochester, Michigan 12th September 1971.

I always think that is a shame. There are other P-Funk live albums but I’ve always much preferred Funkadelic to Parliament because of the rock based guitar of Eddie Hazel and other members of the gang.

Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions 1969 & 1971

Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions includes an in concert performance of the band from April 1971 as well as live in the studio recordings and songs from gigs in 1969.

It’s often overlooked as a Led Zeppelin live album with much more attention given to:

How The West Was Won – 1972

The Song Remains The Same – 1973

The 2012 release of the reunion concert, Celebration Day has also drawn attention away from the BBC Sessions album. After all how many live Led Zeppelin albums do most fans need?

I think that’s a shame.

What we get on this album are:

  1. John Peel’s Top Gear – recorded from the Playhouse Theatre, London on 3 March 1969 (CD1 tracks 1,2,4)
  2. Chris Grant’s Tasty Pop Sundae – recorded at Aeolian Hall studio 2 on 16 June 1969 (CD1 tracks 3,5,10)
  3. John Peel’s Top Gear – recorded at Maida Vale studio 4 on 24 June 1969 (CD1 tracks 6 to 9)
  4. On Night Stand – recorded from the Playhouse Theatre on 27 June 1969 (CD1 tracks 11 – 14)
  5. In Concert – recorded from the Playhouse Theatre, London on 1 April 1971 (all CD2)

The Band Rock Of Ages 1971

Rock Of Ages is the first live album recorded by The Band from shows at the Academy of Music in New York City December 28 to 31, 1971.

I think this is a much better album than the more famous live album The Last Waltz which captured an all-star cast at The Band’s last gig.
