Jimi Hendrix In The West 1969 1970

Hendrix In The West is a compilation album of live recordings from 1969 and 1970 and was one of the early posthumous releases that would appear under the Jimi Hendrix name.

This originally collected together performances from February 1969 through to August 1970. It has been re-released in a remastered version in 2011 with extra songs and the removal of the two Royal Albert Hall 1969 songs.

The re-released removed Little Wing and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) from the February 1969 London performance and replaced them with Little Wing from Winterland in October 1968 and Voodoo Chile from San Diego in May 1969.

To some extent this album has been superseded by the release of the individual concerts.

Miles Davis Bitches Brew Live 1969 1970

Bitches Brew Live is a live album by Miles Davis.

It includes:

  • three previously unreleased songs recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 5, 1969 (tracks 1 to 3)
  • the full set played at the Isle Of Wight Festival in England on August 29, 1970.

3 PREVIOUSLY UNISSUSED TRACKS recorded July 5, 1969 at NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL including the first ever professionally recorded live version of “Miles Runs The Voodoo Down” and the first known recording of the revamped electric version of “Sanctuary”

The band for the Newport performance was:

Miles Davis – trumpet
Chick Corea – electric piano
Dave Holland – bass
Jack DeJohnette – drums

Wayne Shorter missed this performance because of traffic problems.

Playing at the Isle Of Wight were:

Miles Davis – trumpet
Gary Bartz – alto  and soprano sax
Chick Corea – electric piano
Keith Jarrett – organ
Dave Holland – bass
Jack DeJohnette – drums
Airto Moreira – percussion

2. Sanctuary
3. It s About That Time/The Theme
4. Directions
5. Bitches Brew
6. It s About That Time
7. Sanctuary
8. Spanish Key
9. The Theme

There are a lot of live recordings of Miles Davis in this electric period in the late 1960s but the Newport tracks are very unusual with Davis backed only by the rhythm section.

This isn’t my era of jazz but I can understand that this is an important phase.
