When I think of a singer-songwriter, my first thoughts turn to someone strumming a guitar or playing the piano while singing songs that he or she wrote.
Of course, it isn’t quite that simple. What happens when someone else also plays or sings?
I’ve found that it’s a grey area when we start adding other people because ultimately it gets tough to distinguish singer songwriters from groups where one person tends to write and sing their songs. I’ve tried to be reasonably consistent as people move from pure singer songwriting to rock and pop groups.
I also discovered that there’s an issue of crossover between singer-songwriters and folk and country artists. To find what you’re looking for, I’ve given you various links at the bottom if you don’t find it on this page.

What Are the All Time Best Live Albums By Singer Songwriters?
I don’t have a readers poll to find the best live albums for this decade but I do have a poll to find the all time best live albums by singer-songwriters.

Live is a live album by James Taylor.
It was recorded in November 1992 released in August 1993.The original album was a double CD with 30 songs on it. A 17 song version called Best Live was also released in 1993 and an even shorter version, still called Best Live with 12 songs was released the following year.
The Live Anthology is a live album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
The standard edition has four CDs.A deluxe edition was also released with an additional CD, two DVDs, a vinyl copy of Official Live ‘Leg and a blue-ray disc with all 62 songs on it.
It was recorded at around the world at concerts between 1976 and 2007 and was released in 2009.

Hiatt Comes Alive At Budokan is a joke title playing on the success of Frampton Comes Alive and the many live albums recorded at Budokan including Cheap Trick and Bob Dylan.
Sadly, it didn’t bring him that kind of success.
It’s actually recorded on the American tour between February and May 1994 to promote the Perfectly Good Guitars studio album.

Semi-Detached Mock Tudor is a live album by Richard Thompson.
It was recorded in November 1999 in America while Thompson was promoting the Mock Tudor studio album.

A Night In San Francisco is a live album by Irish singer songwriter Van Morrison which was recorded at concerts in California in December 1993.
I’ve said it before but the world (and especially me) needs for Van Morrison live albums.

JJ Cale Live is the first live album released by the singer songwriter in 2001.
Thyere’s no doubt that JJ Cale had a style that went on to be an influence for other artists. He came to my attention through Eric Clapton and the two songs “After Midnight” and “Cocaine”. His mellow guitar style can be seen in plenty of the classic rock Clapton songs from the early 1970s onwards.
There’s also a strong link into Dire Straits.
JJ Cale died on July 26, 2013.

Live At L’Olympia is a live album by alternative rock singer songwriter Jeff Buckley recorded in concert at Paris Olympia in July 1995.
This album was released posthumously after his death.
Live At Sin-E was originally a live EP by Jeff Buckley but it has since been expanded to a double CD and DVD of this performance from July 1993 at the Sin-E a coffee shop in New York.

Paul Simon’s Concert in the Park is a record of the performance in Central Park, New York on August 15, 1991 in front of a huge audience.
This includes songs from Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints and classics from his days with Art Garfunkel.
