City Boy BBC In Concert 1975

One of my favourite groups who should have been a much bigger success than they were is City Boy from Birmingham, England.

I classify City Boy as art rock with their strong instrumental skills and clever songs. I see other people consider them to be prog rock but in my opinion, the song is always dominant. They did drift more towards AOR after their first couple of albums.

The BBC and Wikipedia describe City Boy as “a moderately successful English rock band in the late 1970s, characterised by complex vocal arrangements and heavy guitars.”

Think of early 10cc and early Queen and you won’t be too far away.

The BBC broadcast some very early In Concert live recordings on City Boy from late 1975 and before their debut self titled album came out.

10cc Live In Concert 1977

10cc Live In Concert is a live album by 10cc that I found when I was looking through my iPod and I realised I hadn’t mentioned it on here..

This was issued by Pickwick Records originally in 1977.

I think it is a shortened version of the Live and Let Live album recorded in 1977.

While the album cover has the four original members of 10cc on it, this is 10cc with Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman but without Kevin Godley and Lol Creme.

Queen Live At The Hammersmith Odeon 1975

Queen Live At The Hammersmith Odeon 1975 isn’t a live album but I wish it was.

I remember this being broadcast on the Old Grey Whistle Test on the BBC on Christmas Eve in 1975, having been recorded earlier in the evening.

Bohemian Rhapsody was #1 on the singles chart in the UK. If I remember correctly, A Night At The Opera was #1 on the albums chart.

And Queen did a great concert which I really hope they turn into a top quality official release because I want to buy it and have done for more than 35 years.

Here is the video of the concert I found on YouTube. I don’t know how long it will stay available but I’m assuming that this has “unofficial permission”. After all Queen can afford to have someone policing their copyright and having YouTube take it down. Continue reading Queen Live At The Hammersmith Odeon 1975

King Crimson The Night Watch 1973

The Night Watch is a live album by progressive rock group King Crimson. It was recorded on 23 November 1973 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Holland while they were promoting the Larks’ Tongues in Aspic studio album.

I think King Crimson could be the most difficult group to buy albums for because of the many different changes in line-up and basic sound.

The group at this stage were:

Robert Fripp – guitar, mellotron
John Wetton – bass guitar, vocals
David Cross – violin, viola, keyboards
Bill Bruford – drums, percussion

Many will argue that this is the classic line-up, even surpassing the version with Greg Lake as all four people appeared on Larks’ Tongues in Aspic, Starless and Bible Black and Red although the involvement of David Cross on Red is very limited.

There is a very strong argument that a group as innovative as King Crimson are best live rather than caught in the studio.

Barclay James Harvest Live Tapes 1977

Live Tapes is the second live album from Barclay James Harvest and was released in 1978. It was recorded on the 1976 and 1977 tours.

I’ve got a soft spot for this live album because I nearly went to see BJH on the Octoberon tour. As a schoolboy, money was tight and it was either these guys or Be Bop Deluxe.

I am treating this stage of Barclay James Harvest on the progressive rock / art rock border.

Television Live At The Old Waldorf 1978

Live At The Old Waldorf is a live album by Television recorded at the Old Waldorf, San Francisco on 29th June 1978.

It has been difficult to get because it’s twice been issued as a limited edition release but I bought the mp3 version from Amazon.

10cc In Concert 1975 (King Biscuit Flower Hour)

10cc In Concert is the UK version of the King Biscuit Flower Hour recording of all the original members of 10cc performing live from the Original Soundtrack tour in November 1975 in Santa Monica.

Strangely, the performance didn’t include any of the tracks from thealbum they were recording.

At least this is the proper 10cc, unlike Live and Let Live and 10cc Live.

Roxy Music Concerto or Ladytron 1979

Concerto is a live album by Roxy Music recorded in 1979 and released in 2001. It has also been released as Ladytron in 2002 and Concert Classics in 1998.

Confused?

This is Roxy Music after they’ve reunited and recorded the Manifesto studio album so it’s a much smoother, perhaps less interesting group.

This album has been released under license and Briyan Ferry and the other members of Roxy Music have had nothing to do with the release.
