Barclay James Harvest sit on the boundary between progressive rock and art rock.
As such, they were not progressive enough for many who loved prog rock and indeed were seen as the Poor Men’s Moody Blues, an ironic title they used for one of their own songs.
However for true fans, they got the balance right when so many acts were too progressive or too arty.

It was recorded at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, London and the Liverpool Stadium in 1974.
BBC In Concert 1972 is a live album by Barclay James Harvest in concert with the Barclay James Harvest Symphony Orchestra.
In the early 1970s it was a popular idea for progressive rock bands to tour with classical musicals in some form of orchestra to help emphasise the distinction between prog and pop. Unfortunately it was extremely expensive to do and BJH hadn’t reached the level of success to allow them to continue with the experiment for long.
This therefore makes this album a very interesting addition to the live albums by Barclay James Harvest.

Berlin – A Concert for the People is a live album by Barclay James Harvest.
It was recorded on the steps of the Reichstag in West Berlin next to the Berlin Wall on August 30th, 1980 but not released until 1982.

Back in the 1970s Barclay James Harvest produced some classy music that was on the border between progressive rock and art rock with studio albums including Everyone Is Everybody Else (1974), Time Honoured Ghosts (1975), Octoberon (1976) and Gone to Earth (1977).
Ironically, they even recorded a song called Poor Man’s Moody Blues because that’s who they probably most resemble.

Live Tapes is the second live album from Barclay James Harvest and was released in 1978. It was recorded on the 1976 and 1977 tours.
I’ve got a soft spot for this live album because I nearly went to see BJH on the Octoberon tour. As a schoolboy, money was tight and it was either these guys or Be Bop Deluxe.
I am treating this stage of Barclay James Harvest on the progressive rock / art rock border.
