Live Singer Songwriter Albums Recorded In The 2000s

When I think of a singer-songwriter, my first thoughts turn to someone strumming a guitar or playing the piano while singing songs that he or she wrote.

Of course, it isn’t quite that simple. What happens when someone else also plays or sings?

I’ve found that it’s a grey area when we start adding other people because ultimately it gets tough to distinguish singer songwriters from groups where one person tends to write and sing their songs. I’ve tried to be reasonably consistent as people move from pure singer songwriting to rock and pop groups.

I also discovered that there’s an issue of crossover between singer-songwriters and folk and country artists. To find what you’re looking for, I’ve given you various links at the bottom if you don’t find it on this page.

Tom Petty The Live Anthology 1976 to 2007

The Live Anthology is a live album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

The standard edition has four CDs.A deluxe edition was also released with an additional CD, two DVDs, a vinyl copy of Official Live ‘Leg and a blue-ray disc with all 62 songs on it.

It was recorded at around the world at concerts between 1976 and 2007 and was released in 2009.

Jackson Browne Solo Acoustic Vol 1 2005

Solo Acoustic Vol 1 is a live album by Jackson Browne featuring him playing his songs solo with an acoustic guitar and a piano. It was recorded in 2005.

When I was a student in the late 1970s, I used to play his album The Pretender when I was feeling down. It helped a lot to lift my mood.

It was such a success that a few years later, he followed it up with Solo Acoustic Vol 2.

Elton John One Night Only The Greatest Hits 2000

One Night Only The Greatest Hits is a live album by classic rock star Elton John. It was recorded at two concerts at the Madison Square Garden in New York in October 2000.

I don’t why but I’m irritated by the title One Night Only when there were two nights.

The album also brought out various famous guest stars – Kiki Dee, Ronan Keating, Bryan Adams, Anastacia and Mary J. Blige.

There’s obviously no problem with Kiki Dee singing on Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. We’d rather have her than anyone else. But I’m not sure that the Elton John purists are going to want the others.

It’s not like it’s John Lennon turning up to help sing Lucy In The Sky Of Diamonds is it? (see Here & There)

John Stewart Front Row Music 2000

Front Row Music: Before the War is a live album by singer songwriter John Stewart recorded at Fibbers in York, England and at The Turf Inn in Dalry, Scotland in 2000. Some of the songs have been featured in the DVD, Front Row Moonlight.

A previous album, The Phoenix Concerts was recorded in 1974.

Randy Newman Live In London 2008

Live In London is the second official live album by singer songwriter Randy Newman after his 1970 Live album.

On his tour to promote the Harps And Angels studio album, Randy Newman arranged a special concert at LSO St. Luke’s, a converted church in London and he was accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra. The performance was televised and has now been released as a live album.

Strictly speaking Live In Barcelona is a recording of a Bruce Springsteen concert from Barcelona in October 2002 that is captured on DVD rather than CD and doesn’t count as a live album.

But the world doesn’t have enough official Bruce Springsteen live albums and I don’t want you to miss out.

Nils Lofgren Band Live 2002

The Nils Lofgren Band Live album was recorded in 2002 and released in 2003 and catches Nils focusing on his recent past and his time with Grin.

He nearly made it into the big time in the mid 70s but he’s carried on recording good music as well as supporting Bruce Springsteen as a member of the E Street Band.
