Joy Division Still 1980

Still is a compilation of studio tracks by Joy Division and two concert recordings from at Birmingham and High Wycombe.

Confusingly, Amazon report the High Wycombe concert was on 13 July 1979 while Wikipedia go with 20 February 1980.

The Birmingham gig was the last before singer Ian Curtis killed himself.

Wishbone Ash Live Dates 2 1976 to 1980

Live Dates 2 is a live compilation album by Wishbone Ash pulling together recordings from 1976 to 1980.

In the original Live Dates, Ted Turner was the second guitarist duelling with Andy Powell but in Live Dates 2, he’s replaced by Laurie Wisefield.

The CD has been unavailable for many years except as an expensive import, but checking on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk shows that you can now get it for a normal price.

Ted Nugent Intensities In 10 Cities 1980

Intensities in 10 Cities is a second live album by Ted Nugent after the big success of Double Live Gonzo.

What’s unusual about this album is that the songs featured don’t appear on any earlier Ted Nugent or Amboy Dukes albums.

The story is that Nugent was testing new songs out live and played about 20 on the 1980 tour and picked out the 10 that were best received. I’m sure that his shows had plenty of the fan’s favourites included as well.

Bob Seger Nine Tonight 1980

Nine Tonight is the second live album by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. It was recorded in 1980 in Detroit when Seger had become an international superstar.

Before his first live album, Live Bullet, Bob Seger was a hard working rock’n’roll singer who had gained a great reputation in his home territory of Detroit, Michigan but he wasn’t well known or very popular elsewhere in the USA or internationally.

Live Bullet is a fiery, energetic set which demanded attention and Seger had the nous to capitalise on it with his following commercial studio albums, Night Moves and Stranger In Town.

Releasing Nine Tonight was an obvious move to give the fans a chance to hear the new Seger show with the hits.

This album was remastered in 2011 and an extra song – Brave Strangers – has been added.

Rush Exit Stage Left 1980 & 1981

Exit Stage Left is the second live album by Rush after the success of their first,  All The World’s A Stage.

It was recorded at two concerts – June 10-11, 1980 at The Apollo, Glasgow, Scotland on the Permanent Waves tour and March 27, 1981 at The Forum, Montreal on the Moving Pictures tour.

This represents the peak time for the group as they changed their sound from the progressive heavy metal of All The World’s A Stage to a more classic rock style. They even started having hit singles with songs like Spirit Of the Radio and Tom Sawyer.

Pink Floyd Is There Anybody Out There? 1980 & 1981

Is There Anybody Out There? is the Pink Floyd live recording of The Wall concerts from 1980 and 1981 at Earls Court London.

I wasn’t lucky enough to be at these gigs but I had a flatmate who raved about how good The Wall concerts were.

This album was first issued in 2000 and is really the first prime time Pink Floyd live album when the group had conquered the world. (Ummagumma was too early and Delicate Sound Of Thunder and Pulse were a controversial version of the Floyd without the main songwriter, Roger Waters.)

Pink Floyd Is There Anybody Out There?

Whether this album has a role to play in your album collection depends on two things:

  1. What you think about The Wall as a music experience – the best known tracks (Another Brick In The Wall pt2, Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell) are on both Delicate Sound Of Thunder and Pulse.
  2. Whether The Wall is better live than in the studio

Southside Johnny Reach Up And Touch The Sky 1980

Reach Up And Touch The Sky is a live album by Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes which was recorded in 1980.

It’s hard not to immediately think about Bruce Springsteen when you think about Southside Johnny and that’s a shame because he’s produced some great albums on his own.

Talking Heads The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads 1977 to 1981

The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads is a live compilation album from Talking Heads spanning the years from 1977 to 1981.

This represents the time when Talking Heads were at their most innovative, coming out of the punk movement at the CBGBs club but sounding nothing like punk. In my classification system I’m treating talking Heads as both a new wave band and an art rock band.

This album represents Talking Heads at their brilliant, quirky best and in my opinion is even more exciting than Stop Making Sense.

If you’re wondering about the title, the group were often incorrectly called The Talking Heads. David Byrne would often introduce songs with the phrase “The name of this song …”
