The Best Live Album By Talking Heads

What are the best live albums by Talking Heads?

Their two officially approved albums, The Name Of The Band Is Talking Heads and Stop Making Sense receive plenty of praise but are there any of the unofficial albums that can compare or be even better?

What Are The Best Live Album By Talking Heads?

I have created a readers poll. I’m expecting the well known albums to get plenty of votes but it will be interesting to see which unofficial albums receive recommendations. Continue reading The Best Live Album By Talking Heads

The Boarding House, San Francisco is a live recording of a concert by Talking  Heads which was originally broadcast on the radio.

It was recorded on 16th September 1978.

Talking Heads Performance 1979

Performance is a live recording by Talking Heads made for broadcast on the radio and turned into a live album released by the Applebush label.

It was recorded at The Berklee School of Music in Boston on 24th August 1979 while the band were promoting the Fear Of Music studio album.

I’ve also seen what I think is this recording offered for sale on the Sonic Boom as Boston Tea Party with two extra songs at the end from Saturday Night Live. These songs are repeats of Take Me To The River and Artists Only.

I think this is one of those live recordings that slips through the copyright laws after 35 years and can be sold legally in Europe. Please correct me if you know the truth.

The two official live albums, The Name Of The Band Is Talking Heads and Stop Making Sense are two of the greatest live albums ever released. It is interesting to hear other material when Talking Heads were such an innovative new wave band in the late 1970s.

Talking Heads Real Live Wires 1978

Real Live Wires is a live album by Talking Heads released on the Smokin’ label.

It was recorded at The Park West, in Chicago, in 1978 while the group were promoting their second album, More Songs About Buildings and Food for a radio broadcast.

There is another version of this recording on the Nova Sales & Distribution (UK) Ltd label called Live Chicago 1978 but feedback from Amazon is that the recording quality is not as good as Real Live Wires.

Talking Heads The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads 1977 to 1981

The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads is a live compilation album from Talking Heads spanning the years from 1977 to 1981.

This represents the time when Talking Heads were at their most innovative, coming out of the punk movement at the CBGBs club but sounding nothing like punk. In my classification system I’m treating talking Heads as both a new wave band and an art rock band.

This album represents Talking Heads at their brilliant, quirky best and in my opinion is even more exciting than Stop Making Sense.

If you’re wondering about the title, the group were often incorrectly called The Talking Heads. David Byrne would often introduce songs with the phrase “The name of this song …”

Talking Heads Stop Making Sense 1983

Stop Making Sense is a live album recorded by Talking Heads on the tour to promote the studio album Speaking In Tongues in 1983.

It is also the soundtrack for the concert film of the same name.

This live album is very highly regarded by critics but I have to admit to being puzzled because I don’t believe it is a match for The Name Of The Band Is Talking Heads, a live album from earlier in their career.
