Live In Japan is a live album by Deep Purple.
Made In Japan is considered to be one of the all-time classic live albums by any hard rock or heavy metal group.
So what could be better? How about recordings of all three concerts played in Japan at the Festival Hall, Osaka on the 15 and 16 August 1972 and at the Budokan in Tokyo on the 17 August 1972.
Instead of one terrific version of Highway Stars, try three…
Songs On Deep Purple Live In Japan
Unfortunately Deep Purple didn’t vary their set-lists on tour very much so you basically get three versions of the same concert but with variations in the improvised solos.
Disc 1 Osaka on 15 August 1972
Highway Star – 7:37
Child in Time – 11:51
The Mule – 9:36
Strange Kind of Woman – 8:50
Lazy – 10:26
Space Truckin’ – 21:35
Black Night – 6:25
Notice that Smoke on the Water is missing but not because it’s bad. This concert provided the version included on Made In Japan. The encore Speed King is included on CD3.
Disc 2 – Osaka on 16 August 1972
Highway Star – 7:07
Smoke on the Water – 7:25
Child in Time – 12:30
The Mule – 10:22
Strange Kind of Woman – 10:35
Lazy – 10:21
Space Truckin’ – 20:13
The encore Lucille is included in the Made In Japan re-release.
Disc 3 – Tokyo on 17 August 1972
Highway Star – 7:14
Smoke on the Water – 7:06
Child in Time – 11:32
Strange Kind of Woman – 11:26
Lazy – 11:16
Space Truckin’ – 19:19
Speed King – 7:55 (recorded in Osaka on 15 August)
This is performed by the Mark II version of Deep Purple:
Ian Gillan – vocals
Ritchie Blackmore – lead guitar
Roger Glover – bass
Jon Lord – keyboards
Ian Paice – drums
Personally I think you have to be a Deep Purple fanatic to want this album as well as (or instead of) Made In Japan. I’m not so much interested in small variations between performances in the same tour as the development of the live concerts over the years.

It is NOT nominated in the poll to find the best heavy metal and hard rock live albums. Do you think it should be? Well over 100 people have voted so far.
Because there are so many great hard rock and heavy metal live albums I have split the poll into two and you may find some of your favourites in the second division. Albums will be promoted when they get enough votes.Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
