Argent Encore 1974

Encore is a live album by progressive rock group Argent. It was recorded in 1974 as the group toured to promote their studio album Nexus.

Argent did the opposite journey to Genesis.

Argent turned from a high class but not very successful pop rock group to progressive rock while Genesis turned their back on progressive rock and became a highly accomplished pop rock group.

Encore catches Argent very much in their prog rock phase and if you don’t like keyboards and synthesisers you should probably move along.

Argent could well have been forgotten except for the big hit single Hold Your Head Up.

There is also a BBC Radio 1 In Concert live album by Argent at a similar time but it’s difficult to find at a reasonable price.

Rick Wakeman Journey to the Centre of the Earth 1974

Journey To The Centre Of The Earth is a recording of a live performance given by keyboard maestro Rick Wakeman at the Royal Festival Hall in London in January 1974.

Journey was the second solo album by Rick Wakeman and the first after he left Yes and is based on the Jules Verne story.

It must have been a stunning show as Rick Wakeman didn’t hold back on his ambitions.

Performing with him are the London Symphony Orchestra, the English Chamber Choir and a rock band that later became known as The English Rock Ensemble. The story is narrated by the actor David Hemmings.

Confusingly, to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of this album, Rick Wakeman re-recorded it in the studio and added back some extra songs that he’s written at the time. Wakeman then toured with this new version.

The first ever rock concert I went to was by Rick Wakeman on the No Earthy Connection tour in 1976. It was very impressive to see him surrounded by different keyboards and jumping from one to another with his long hair and cape flying. he also told some funny jokes.

Gentle Giant Playing The Fool 1976

Playing The Fool is the first live album released by progressive rock group Gentle Giant. It was recorded on their European tour in the autumn of 1976.

I always think that Gentle Giant are one of the groups that sorts out the serious prog rock fans from the people who like the best known albums from Genesis, Yes and Pink Floyd.

Emerson Lake & Palmer Pictures At An Exhibition 1971

Pictures At An Exhibition is the first live album released by progressive rock group Emerson Lake & Palmer. It is their interpretation of the Mussorgsky classical composition and was recorded at a concert in Newcastle, England in March 1971.

Have ELP butchered a classic with their pretentious keyboard excesses or have they charmingly updated it?

I bought Pictures At An Exhibition as a teenager and I’ve always had a soft spot for it.
