We are very short of well recorded live recordings by The Beatles. Hollywood Bowl showed the problem of recording the concerts, so these in the studio live recordings avoid the overwhelming audience screaming.

If you are a really keen fan of The Beatles, then this album and volume 2 are both essential.

It has plenty of covers that you won’t hear anywhere else and there’s a freshness to the well known songs. You also get spoken sections that highlight the personality and humour of The Beatles although I find them distracting.

To the casual fan, there are better places to focus your attention. My personal favourites are Rubber Soul, The White Album and the second side of Abbey Road and it’s hard to overlook the Red 62-66 and the Blue 67-70 compilations.

Other fans will advocate Revolver and Sergeant Pepper as their best albums.

I’ve owned Live At The BBC and it proved to be too far down my list of albums to hear when I was in the mood for The Beatles but then, I have extremely cosmopolitan tastes that continually search for variety.

If you want to hear The Beatles songs performed live and sung by a Beatle, it’s hard to overlook Paul McCartney’s live albums. I wish he’d do more Lennon songs but I particularly like the vigour on Tripping The Live Fantastic (Highlights).
