Live is the first live album by Uriah Heep, recorded in Birmingham in January 1973 on the The Magician’s Birthday tour.

Live Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Albums From The 1970s
Is there a difference between hard rock and heavy metal?
Yes but I suspect that each of us would draw the dividing line somewhere different.
Wikipedia defines hard rock as:
“Hard rock (or heavy rock) is a loosely defined subgenre of rock music which has its earliest roots in mid-1960s garage rock, blues rock and psychedelic rock. It is typified by a heavy use of aggressive vocals, distorted electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, and often accompanied with pianos and keyboards.”
Wikipedia defines heavy metal as:
“Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are often associated with masculinity, aggression, and machismo.”
As far as I’m concerned this category ranges from excellent to unbearable with plenty of ordinary rock and metal that’s acceptable but not special. It can be too heavy and too loud and the category includes bands that I think are disgusting. Mind you, I like blues rock and even singer songwriters so what do I know?

The All Time Best Hard Rock And Heavy Metal Live Albums
I don’t have a readers poll to find the best hard, heavy rock albums from this decade but I do have a poll to find the all time best live albums that is a great guide.
Please vote in the poll to find the best hard rock and heavy metal live albums.
Because there are so many great hard rock and heavy metal live albums I have split the poll into two and you may find some of your favourites in the second division. Albums will be promoted when they get enough votes.
Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment. You can get these albums from Amazon.com – Amazon.co.uk

UFO Strangers In The Night 1978
Strangers In The Night is a live album by UFO recorded on their 1978 US tour to promote the Obsession album. Guitarist Michael Schenker left before recording another album.
Unlike Deep Purple or even Uriah Heep, it’s hard to pick out a classic studio album by UFO that is essential listening.
They are all good but there’s no In Rock, Machine Head or Demons & Wizards. I have the five recorded with Michael Schenker after they moved away from space rock and I think they are all good rather than great.
But UFO nail it with Strangers In The Night.

Budgie Radio Sessions 1974 & 1978
Radio Sessions 1974 & 1978 is a live album by Budgie which consists of two concerts recorded by the group and broadcast on the radio. The first in London in 1974 and the second in Los Angeles in 1978.

Bad Company Live in Albuquerque 1976
Live in Albuquerque is a live album by Bad Company of a concert in March 1976 which was withdrawn shortly after its release in 2006. They were promoting their third album, Run With The Pack.
This is a shame because classic rock lovers and in particular Bad Company fans need a live album of the group in their prime.

Rory Gallagher Stage Struck 1979
Stage Struck is Rory Gallagher‘s third live album and presents a heavier, hard rock approach to his guitar style recorded in 1979.
The blues had been the emphasis of Live In Europe and Irish Tour.

Deep Purple Live In Paris 1975
Live In Paris recorded on the 7th April 1975 is the last Mark III performance by Deep Purple because Ritchie Blackmore left the band and had already recorded Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio.

Aerosmith Live Bootleg 1978
Live Bootleg is a live album by Aerosmith recorded from concerts in 1977 and ’78 with two songs from a radio broadcast in 1973.
This represents the group after their first peak of success with the heavy metal/sleaze rock classic albums Toys In The Attic and Rocks which were strongly influenced by Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones.

Led Zeppelin How The West Was Won 1972
How The West Was Won is a live album by Led Zeppelin from gigs in June 1972 at the LA Forum and Long Beach Arena in the USA.
The world waited for a long time for a Led Zeppelin live album and when it did appear, The Song Remains The Same received a disappointing reception although it’s been improved with the extended reissue.
How The West Was Won was released in 2003 and was immediately acclaimed as the real sound of Led Zeppelin live.
Led Zeppelin How The West Was Won Overall rating – 25/30
Kiss Alive 2 1977
Kiss Alive 2 is the second live album by Kiss, recorded in 1977 with songs from Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over and Love Gun.
The performances came from The Forum, Los Angeles, Capital Theatre, Passaic, New Jersey and Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan.
I remember reading the reviews in the Sounds music paper by Geoff Barton where he raved about it and said that it was even better than Kiss Alive! and he loved that first album.
